The Council of Europe wants to strengthen the partnership with Morocco | APAnews

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and High Representative Josep Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening its relations with Morocco in all areas, in accordance with the principle “pacta sunt servanda” (the agreements must be respected).

At a summit in Brussels, the European Council, bringing together the heads of state and government of the 27 member states of the European Union, underlined, on Friday, the capital importance of its relations with Morocco. The strategic partnership between the EU and the Kingdom was once again highlighted, confirming Europe’s attachment to strengthening its ties with its southern Mediterranean neighbor.

This statement comes in a particular context, two weeks after a decision by the Court of Justice of the EU, which sparked discussions on the nature of bilateral agreements. Despite these developments, the European message remains constant: relations with Morocco are valuable and must be preserved and consolidated in all sectors. The areas of cooperation range from trade to security, including energy and migration issues.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, had already expressed their desire, in a joint declaration, to strengthen this partnership, based on the principle “ pacta sunt servanda” (agreements must be respected). This principle, central to international law, underlines the importance of honoring bilateral commitments, despite legal or political challenges.

This position was reiterated recently by Josep Borrell during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, emphasizing the “high value” that the Union places on this strategic relationship. Morocco, a key partner in several sensitive issues for Europe, particularly in terms of managing migratory flows and economic cooperation, remains a crucial ally for the Union.

This renewed support from the EU for Morocco demonstrates the desire of both parties to overcome recent obstacles and to continue building a common future, based on cooperation and mutual respect.
