Sexual abuse: Vatican renounces procedure but reprimands three Swiss bishops

Published on October 18, 2024 at 6:08 p.m. / Modified on October 18, 2024 at 9:21 p.m.

For the Vatican, “no element has emerged allowing the identification of punishable offenses which would require the opening of canonical criminal proceedings.” Pronounced by the American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, this verdict follows the investigation led by the Bishop of Chur, Joseph Bonnemain. For the justice of the Church, the latter initiated denunciations against three of his peers: the bishop of Sion, that of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg, as well as the father-abbot of the abbey of Saint-Maurice.

In June 2023, Father Nicolas Betticher questioned the actions of several bishops in cases of sexual violence. In a letter addressed to the pope’s representative in Switzerland, he criticized the father-abbot of the abbey of Saint-Maurice Jean Scarcella of having sexually harassed a young man, while mentioning potential other victims.
