Schaerbeek torn between the PS and the MR-Engaged list: they collected… the same number of seats

Nothing is decided yet in Schaerbeek. The town of 130,000 inhabitants is torn between the PS on the one hand and the MR and the Engagés on the other. Both camps claim the mayorate.

On the one hand, there is the Socialist Party (PS) candidate, Hasan Koyuncu, who obtained the greatest number of preferential votes, which would make him the logical choice for the office of mayor. However, the Reform Movement (MR) does not agree with this option. The head of the liberal list, Audrey Henry, puts forward a main argument: the controversial character of the outgoing mayor. In fact, Hasan Koyuncu invited an imam to the Brussels Parliament last February, an imam who recited a surah from the Koran.

This affair sparked a lively controversy at the time, and it displeased the MR, which complicated the discussions. In addition, the two lists, that of the PS on one side and that of the MR-Les Engagés on the other, obtained the same number of seats in Schaerbeek, i.e. ten seats each.

Where are the negotiations?

Today, no all-party meeting will take place. However, today one person plays a central role in these negotiations, acting as a mediator. This is Vincent Vanhalewyn, head of the Écolo list, a party which seems essential to form a majority if the PS and the MR-Les Engagés fail to collaborate. Vincent Vanhalewyn plans to meet the different heads of the list today to initiate discussions.

Asked about this, he answered the question of who, in his opinion, would be the next mayor of Schaerbeek. According to him, there is a logic based on the election results. The Socialist Party came first, and Hasan Koyuncu, head of the list, obtained the most votes of all the candidates. It is therefore normal, according to Vanhalewyn, that he is a candidate for the office of mayor.

For the moment, there is a logic which is the result of the elections, there is the Socialist Party which is the first party, Hasan Koyuncu, the head of the list which gets the most votes of all the other candidates, all confused list“, recognizes the ecologist.

As for the idea that Audrey Henry of the MR could become mayor, he specifies that he has no exclusive rights over her person. “The logic of elections dictates that at one point, the first head of the list of the first party, which receives the most votes of the entire municipality, can be legitimately represented as mayor. explains Vincent Vanhalewyn.
