Sonuma Archives – Chopin – The song of the piano (4/4)

Broadcast produced in 1977. Final part of a 4-part series devoted to Frédéric Chopin, produced by Robert Lombaerts. We arrive at the end of Chopin’s life, marked first by his break with George Sand. After a tour in London , the composer returned to where he settled at Place Vendôme. It was there that, some time later, he died – of tuberculosis it is said, although the diagnosis is today strongly contested – He was buried in Père-Lachaise but his heart was sealed in a wall of the Holy Church – Cross in Warsaw. To discuss the end of Chopin’s life and also to situate the scope of his work, Marc Castelain and Robert Lombaerts interviewed Georges Lubin, Bernard Gavety, Professor Vladimir Jankelevitch, Arthur Rubinstein and Professor Zofia Lissa, Polish musicologist as well as a Polish doctor who will explain his diagnosis of the illness from which Chopin suffered. The program will also be illustrated by musical pieces: – the Concerto sn F minor, performed by Arthur Rubinstein – the Sonata op.35 performed by Wladimir Askhenazy- the Polonaise op26 n°2, performed by W. Malcuzinsky- the Nocturne op 15 n°1, performed by Witold Malcuzinsky- the Mazurka op24 n°4 performed by Zimerman.
