Alleged criminal activities linked to India: ‘very worrying,’ says Jagmeet Singh | Public inquiry into foreign interference

The leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, said he was very concerned about the allegations reported by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) regarding foreign interference on Monday. In the wake of the still ongoing investigation into the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the federal police have carried out an outing to denounce the role of the Indian government in the case.

The commissioner of the GRC notably reported that agents linked to the Indian government orchestrated on Canadian soil homicides, extortion and other criminal acts of violence.

Six Indian diplomats were expelled from Canada after the revelations. India responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats.

Jagmeet Singh expressed his concerns over a foreign government using criminal elements in Canada to threaten Canadians. In response to the numerous reported shootings, he added that it was a threat, not only to the targeted Canadians, but also to everyone who lives in the surrounding area.

I love our country. I love our democracy. I want to do everything I can to defend our country and our democracy.

The leader of NPD also protested against the fact that a portion significative of the rise in gun violence over the past year is attributed to a foreign government.

A Sikh, Jagmeet Singh refused to confirm whether he had been targeted by actors linked to the Indian government. It’s not about me, he said. It’s about the safety of people all over this country.

He took advantage of the press conference to throw an arrow at the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre. Jagmeet Singh criticizes him for not obtaining the necessary security clearance to be fully aware of the file, which, according to him, gives India the impression that one of Canada’s leaders is looking in the other direction.

Pierre Poilievre, for his part, affirms that the rating would allow him to speak less freely about foreign interference. However, Singh assured that he is not limited in what he can say on this issue.

Sanctions requested

Jagmeet Singh calls for tough sanctions against Indian diplomats. Six of them have already been expelled from Canada and it is impossible to lay criminal charges against foreign diplomats.

He also called for a meeting of the public security committee to protect Canadians.

Ultimately, he called for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – a far-right Hindu nationalist group present in many countries, including Canada – to be banned.

The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, also reacted to the sanctions by way of a press release, judging the expulsion of Indian diplomats appropriate.

Today we see the extent to which foreign actors act with impunity in Canada, he said. We must improve the security of everyone living on the territory and, to do so, intensify collaboration with Canada’s allies in terms of intelligence and solidarity in the face of such actions.

South of the border, the United States on Tuesday urged India to take seriously the allegations. We wanted India to take Canada’s investigations seriously and cooperate with it. They chose another pathState Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters.

Many experts believe that Canada cannot do without India. Former Canadian Ambassador to China Guy Saint-Jacques said, in an interview on the show Midi infowhich Canada is at last stage before breaking off diplomatic relations. The growing importance of India on the international scene as well as the numerous members of the Indian diaspora in Canada would make a complete breakdown in relations very problematic.
