Benjamin Netanyahu calls for withdrawal of peacekeepers from Lebanon

The Israeli Prime Minister’s call comes after five UNIFIL members were injured, including two by confirmed Israeli fire.

Israel calls for the withdrawal of UNIFIL peacekeepers from southern Lebanon. This call, made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this Sunday, comes afterat least five members of the UN peacekeeping forces were injured over the last forty-eight hours, including two by proven Israeli fire.

Netanyahua urges Guterres to take UNIFIL out of “danger zone”

In a speech delivered this Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his regret for “the harm caused to UNIFIL soldiers”. “We are doing everything in our power to prevent this damage. But the simplest and most logical way to do this is simply to remove them from the danger zone.”he added.

The Israeli Prime Minister then addressed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, saying: “Mr. Secretary General, get UNIFIL forces out of harm’s way. This must be done now, immediately.”

UNIFIL accuses Israel of hindering its movements

UN peacekeeping forces accused the Israeli army this Sunday of obstructing one of their movements and demanded explanations for what they consider to be violations of international law.

Earlier, UNIFIL accused Israeli soldiers of deliberately targeting its Naqoura base and said new explosions hit its headquarters on Friday injuring two peacekeepers.

The Lebanese Prime Minister, for his part, denounced this Sunday “a new refusal by Israel to comply with international law.”

International leaders condemn Israeli attacks in Lebanon

The attacks drew widespread condemnation, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell demanding accountability from Israel and European Council President Charles Michel calling on all parties to respect international humanitarian law.

Around 40 countries also strongly condemned the recent Israeli attacks against the UN mission in Lebanon.
