Beirut touched to the heart: “We are not safe anywhere”

While the southern suburbs of Beirut are generally targeted, Israel bombed the center of the Lebanese capital twice on Thursday evening. The feeling of insecurity is spreading to the entire population.

Ahmad feared Israeli jets, but he thought his neighborhood was safe: “We were a few meters away when we heard a huge boom, it was unusual. The neighborhood has never been targeted since the start of the war,” he says. “When we arrived, everything was destroyed. »

The 31-year-old Lebanese climbs over the stone blocks to find some family souvenirs. Pieces of the ceiling are swinging in the air: the shack where he grew up was gutted by the strike on Thursday evening. “I was born here, in this house. It’s a terrible hurt to see my memories disappear overnight,” he says. All around, buildings were devastated. “Our neighbors died yesterday, with their children,” he confides, pointing to a half-demolished building. “The worst thing is that there were displaced people from the south who had taken refuge in this street: they felt safe there. »
