On the EPFL campus, testimonies of hope brought by the Circle of Israeli and Palestinian Parents

Very quickly after October 7, 2023, university campuses became, in Switzerland as elsewhere, places of indignation over the situation in Gaza, without their rectorates knowing how to avoid the feeling of exclusion of some of the students. A year later, at the instigation of the chaplaincy of Unil and EPFL, the Lausanne campus welcomes the Israeli and Palestinian Parents’ Circle on October 16 in its large Forum Rolex auditorium. A Middle Eastern organization now known throughout the world which, for almost thirty years, has been trying to go beyond the usual anathemas.

“The price to pay to join our association is significant. You must have lost a child in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” says Rami Elhanan, contacted by videoconference from his living room in Jerusalem. This septuagenarian is mourning his daughter, killed in 1997 by a suicide attack when she was 14 years old. When, a few years later, his Palestinian friend Bassam Aramin also lost his 10-year-old daughter, shot dead by Israeli fire while she was buying candy, Rami went to the hospital to support him: “It was terrible, I knew exactly what he was going through. Since then, they have jointly advocated reconciliation between their two peoples.
