Tensions in the Middle East: Netanyahu promises to defeat Israel’s ‘enemies’ before October 7 anniversary

On the eve of the anniversary of the October 7 massacre, violent Israeli aerial bombardments on the southern suburbs of Beirut terrorized residents of the Lebanese capital on Sunday, the eve of the first anniversary of the Palestinian Hamas attack on Israel which started the war in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Sunday to defeat Israel’s “enemies” as his army bombed Hezbollah targets near Beirut, a day before the anniversary of the Hamas attack that sparked the war in the Gaza Strip.

“Together we will fight and together we will win”said Mr. Netanyahu, while visiting soldiers deployed in northern Israel, along the Lebanese border. “A year ago we suffered a terrible blow”he said. “Over the course of the next twelve months, we have transformed reality from one extreme to another. The whole world has marveled at the blows you have dealt to our enemies,” added the Prime Minister, who is due to deliver a speech to the nation on Monday.

Israeli attacks

This Sunday in the north of the Gaza Strip, Israel announced “circle” the Jabaliya area, where Hamas “replenishes his strength”. According to Gaza Civil Defense, 17 people including nine children died there.

In the center of the Palestinian territory in Deir al-Balah, at least 26 people were killed in strikes on a mosque and a school welcoming displaced people, according to the Islamist movement’s Ministry of Health.

Another Israeli strike this Sunday targeted a position located near the Roman temples of Baalbeck, in eastern Lebanon, said a local official, specifying that the thousand-year-old site had not been directly hit.

After Iranian missile attacks on Israel on Tuesday, the second attack of its kind in six months, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday threatened Iran, its sworn enemy supporting Hamas and Hezbollah, with similar strikes in Gaza and the Lebanon.

Tehran claimed to be “ready” to retaliate according to the Tasnim agency, citing a military source, and the Iranian Oil Minister visited a key oil site in the country, amid concerns about Israeli retaliation.

On the Lebanese front, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited troops along the border as the Israeli army shelled Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on the world to “put pressure on Israel” for a ceasefire, while according to the Lebanese authorities, 23 people died on Saturday, a toll not including nighttime strikes.

“It was the most violent night we had ever experienced. There was so much bombing that it looked like an earthquake.” tells Mehdi Zaïter, 60, a greengrocer in the southern suburbs of Beirut, where the destruction is enormous, according to journalists on site.

Hamas’ response

The Israeli army announced on Sunday “shots” of rockets from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel, on the eve of the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel which sparked the war in the Palestinian territory.

“Following alerts that were recently issued in areas west of Lakish and around Gaza, a number of shots were detected coming from the north of the Gaza Strip,” said an army spokesperson. “One projectile was intercepted, the others fell in open areas”he added.
