More than 150 climate activists, including Swedish Greta Thunberg, blocked the boulevard du Jardin Botanique in the city center of Brussels, near Rogier, on Saturday afternoon.

After about an hour of action, the activists, including Greta Thunberg, were arrested by the Brussels police. United under the United for Climate Justice platform, they called for an end to government support for the fossil fuel economy across the European Union.

From 2:30 p.m., the activists – attached to each other – sat down on the boulevard, before being quickly put away by the police. Around 3:30 p.m., after several calls from the police inviting the demonstrators to leave the scene, Greta Thunberg and the other activists present were arrested.

For what reason?

Climate defenders are meeting this Saturday from 2:00 p.m. in the streets for the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies. They will depart from Place du Luxembourg in Brussels, before heading towards Mérode, where they will stop.
“Fossil fuels are the main cause of the climate crisis. Stop fossil fuel subsidies now,” can we read on the site dedicated to the demonstration, called “Stop Fossil Subsides”.

According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), subsidies for fossil fuels amounted to more than 400 billion euros in 2023 within the European Union. However, they “encourage the use of coal, oil and gas, which are the main culprits of greenhouse gas emissions and contribute significantly to the climate crisis”explained the organization of the demonstration, which includes the Extinction Rebellion and Code Rouge – Rood movements.

The procession will start from Place du Luxembourg, pass through rue de Trèves, rue Belliard, avenue des Nerviens and avenue des Gaulois. The event will end in Mérode where an assembly will be organized from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. International figures in this struggle will participate, like the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and the Ugandan activist Nicholas Omonuk.

All information relating to the demonstration, initiated by around thirty European movements united under the name “United for Climate Justice” (UCJ), is available on the website dedicated to the event.
