The military barracks of Bière (VD) and Airolo (TI) are affected by the disease. Around thirty soldiers were infected there with norovirus. Suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, they were isolated from the rest of the troop to prevent the spread of the disease.

The soldiers concerned are part of artillery group 1 in Bière and health school 42 in Airolo, the army said in a press release on Friday. They are followed by specialized medical personnel.

The main symptoms of norovirus illness are vomiting, fever and diarrhea. In general, the disease lasts up to 72 hours and recovers without sequelae in young, healthy people.

There is no vaccine against this virus, which is easily transmitted from person to person. Outbreaks thus regularly appear in collective facilities such as barracks, EMS and hospitals, recalls the army. Norovirus infections are most often seen during the winter.
