You don’t know which emoji to add to your awesome Facebook post to catch the eye of your community. Why not ask ChatGPT? OpenAI just announced on October 3 the arrival of a feature nicknamed “Canvas” which can help you with all your writing tasks.

As explained TechcrunchCanvas actually brings together a collection of functionality already present on ChatGPT, but within a more refined interface, designed to help its users concentrate on writing and nothing else. Whether you’re writing code, an email to your boss, or the minutes of your morning meeting, Canvas will provide you with practical shortcuts to guide you through your task.

A writing assistant powered by generative AI

A sort of word processor powered by generative AI, Canvas will play the role of a Clippy-style writing assistant, but this time being useful. The new interface is divided into 3 parts: a main one where text can be freely inserted and modified, a side panel for chatting with ChatGPT and a shortcut bar. The latter allows you to adjust the size or tone of the text (to make it more or less polished), to check for possible grammatical errors or typos, or to even ask ChatGPT for its opinion on the content of the text.

For those who use ChatGPT to create code, Canvas will make it easier for you to check the consistency of the code, add comments to make it more digestible or even translate your production from one language to another (Javascript , Python, C++, PHP etc). It is also possible to select certain parts of the text to request ChatGPT’s opinion on a specific section of the code.

Available for paid accounts

More flexible and practical than the classic small chat window, Canvas wants to “help you collaborate with ChatGPT on a project […] by not limiting yourself to a conversational interface, but creating and improving ideas hand in hand», Indicates OpenAI.

At the moment, the feature is still in beta and only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. It is accessible via the drop-down menu allowing you to choose your language model, but should otherwise open automatically as soon as the chatbot detects a situation where the word processor is more suitable than the chat interface. OpenAI promises that the tool will be available to users of free accounts “as soon as it is no longer in the beta stage ».
