UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel on Tuesday.

Iran launched around 200 ballistic missiles toward Israel on Tuesday, Guterres told the Security Council during an emergency session on the situation in the Middle East.

“As I did in relation to the Iranian attack in April – and as should have been evident yesterday in the context of the condemnation I expressed – I again strongly condemn the massive missile attack carried out yesterday by Iran against Israel,” he said.

Iran said it was a response to the assassinations of Hassan Nasrallah and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Abbas Nilforoushan last week, as well as that of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, in July, Mr. Guterres said.

“Paradoxically, these attacks do nothing to support the cause of the Palestinian people or reduce their suffering,” he added.

Iran fired around 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening, after the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Lebanon killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel would retaliate for Iran’s missile attack. END
