Israeli strike kills two

On Thursday, an Israeli strike killed two people in a car in the southern province of Quneitra, in the part of the Golan controlled by Damascus, the official Syrian news agency SANA reported. It added: “Two citizens were killed in an Israeli attack by a drone that launched a missile at a civilian car”.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said a soldier was among the two people killed. A local security source said: “two charred bodies were removed from a car targeted by a strike”.

This raid comes after particularly violent strikes, attributed by Damascus to Israel, which targeted central Syria on the night of Sunday to Monday and left 18 dead according to the authorities, 27 according to the SOHR. The strikes on the Mesyaf region notably targeted sensitive military sites, according to the NGO. The Israeli army has not yet commented on Thursday morning’s strike.

Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes targeting the army and pro-Iranian groups, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah, deployed in the country in support of the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Israeli raids in Syria intensified after the outbreak of war on October 7 between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
