Sailing: Luna Rossa and Ineos Britannia tied

The Italians of the Luna Rossa challenge and the British crew of Ineos won a victory each on Thursday during the first day of the Louis-Vuitton Cup final, Thursday off the coast of Barcelona.

Luna Rossa won the first race but Ineos Britannia took over in the second. The final is played as a best of 13 matches.

The winner of the Louis-Vuitton Cup final between Ineos Britannia and Luna Rossa will become the challenger for Team New Zealand, double defending champion, during the 37th edition of the America’s Cup in October.

This year’s Louis-Vuitton Cup final is a repeat of the 2021 Prada Cup final, in which Luna Rossa won 7-1, before losing to the New Zealanders in the Cup final of America.

“It’s very difficult, the conditions are probably the windiest we’ve had so far and the waves make the left side of the course very difficult, but the boys did a fantastic job,” the helmsman said on Thursday. Luna Rossa, Francesco Bruni.

Ineos Britannia skipper Ben Ainslie admitted the race was won and lost during the pre-start. “We messed up the start a bit and they had their legs on us,” he admitted. “We have to find a way to increase our speed, to be in front and to stay in front…”
