He’ll start up front: Lando Norris takes pole position at Singapore GP

Lando Norris (McLaren) will start from pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, the 18th of 24 rounds of the Formula 1 world championship. On Saturday, the 24-year-old Briton dominated the Marina Bay circuit (4.94 km) in qualifying, recording a best time of 1:29.525.

Alongside Norris on the starting line will be his world championship rival, Dutchman Max Verstappen (+0.203). The second row will consist of the two Mercedes of British Lewis Hamilton (3rd, +0.316) and George Russell (4th, +0.342). The poleman’s teammate, Australian Oscar Piastri, only finished 5th, 0.428 off the best time. He is ahead of German Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Japanese Yuki Tsunoda (RB).

Ferrari had a difficult Q3, marked first by the retirement of Spaniard Carlos Sainz. On his warm-up lap, he crashed into the barriers, heavily damaging his car after losing control. Following the red flag, Charles Leclerc failed to record a valid time, his times being erased for not respecting track limits.

Mexican Sergio Perez, whose position is in doubt at Red Bull, was eliminated in Q2. He will start 13th on the grid, behind two Williams.

The Grand Prix is scheduled to start on Sunday at 14:00 (Belgian time). With six races to go in the season, Verstappen still leads the world championship standings with 313 points but he feels Norris (254 points) at his back. Leclerc is provisionally 3rd with 235 points.
