Budget cuts: PLR rather happy, left offended

Announced on Friday afternoon, the budget cuts decided by the Federal Council were quick to provoke a reaction from the political world. And, as expected, the reactions were very different, depending on the party. The PLR, for example, described these measures as a “courageous first step”. While the party said it was generally satisfied with the announcements, it would have liked to see more subsidies eliminated. The state could thus save “billions”, according to the PLR. The only major problem for the bourgeois party: the increase in tax on capital withdrawals. “Switzerland does not have a problem with revenue, but with expenditure”, it argued.

The Green Liberals (PVL) also “welcome” the Federal Council’s efforts to rebalance the budgets. However, their congratulations are much more moderate than those of the PLR: “However, the PVL will not support a savings policy that consists of continuing to subsidise the past instead of investing in the future”. The party particularly regrets that savings are being made in climate policy programmes, while “tax privileges” are being maintained in certain sectors, “such as the special VAT rate applied to the hotel industry”.

On the left, the Greens were also offended by these cuts in climate aid, which they described as a “step backwards”. The environmentalist party also decried the abandonment of contributions to daycare centres and the cuts in the AVS. A point of view shared by the PS. The latter also pledged to “fight with all its might this attack on solidarity in Switzerland”.
