Firefighter dies in car swept away by flood

A firefighter was killed in his vehicle swept away by a flood in southern Italy, hit by bad weather and heavy rain, the Interior Minister announced on Wednesday on X.

“I am deeply affected by the tragic death of the fire brigade section chief whose vehicle was swept away by a flood while he and his team were providing assistance to the population” in the Foggia region (south), wrote Matteo Piantedosi.

The colleague who was in the car with the firefighter who was found dead was injured and hospitalized, according to the same source.

The firefighter and his colleague were helping a person whose car had broken down on Tuesday evening when their own vehicle was swept away by a sudden flood of a torrent, according to media reports.

The body of the dead firefighter, missing since Tuesday evening, was only recovered by divers on Wednesday morning, according to the same source.

Italy has been hit by a wave of bad weather for several days and the Civil Protection placed Emilia-Romagna (centre) on orange alert on Wednesday, the second level of alert before the higher level, red, while 11 other regions out of the 20 that make up the peninsula are placed on yellow alert.
