First tests of The Plucky Squire: the new nugget from Devolver Digital? | Xbox

Announced in 2022 already, The Plucky Squire is finally making its debut on our machines. Having offered a few trailers in recent months, the title has managed to attract the curiosity of players with its superb artistic direction. If you are one of them and you are still hesitant about the idea of buying it, that’s good because the first tests of the game have been published. You will find below some summaries.

The Plucky Squire’s first tests

Gameliner – 5/5

All Possible Futures has created a wonderfully creative game with The Plucky Squire. The book itself is colorful and full of fun little puzzles, the answers to which can be found by jumping from one page to the next. Meanwhile, the 3D world on the desktop is incredibly detailed. The transition between these two worlds is quick and smooth, offering a unique combination of gameplay for young and old alike.

Noisy Pixel – 9/10

The Plucky Squire is truly a delightful and charming adventure, filled to the brim with clever jokes, beautiful graphics, and a series of fun gameplay mechanics. It doesn’t overdo it and instead delivers a polished experience from start to finish. While it does hold the player’s hand a little too much for my tastes at times, I had a fantastic time and would love to play it again for the first time.

Digital Trends – 4/5

Once the story finally begins to address its themes in the latter half of the adventure and Jot gains all of his storybook manipulator powers, The Plucky Squire is a joy. We are entering a postmodern era for the video game industry where art itself can begin to discuss what came before it, who made it, and why they made it. The Plucky Squire sits at the heart of this trend. It is a must-read if you want to understand why game developers, artists, or any other creators create things despite all the forces that try to stifle their work.

Wccftech – 7/10

While the game is a lot of fun and I enjoy the gameplay elements, the story just didn’t grab me. I was also initially put off by the wildly contrasting art styles and complicated menus. Overall, the game is an enjoyable experience, suitable for players of all ages. If the story had been more spectacular, it might have drawn me in sooner. The Plucky Squire is clearly a product that has been made with a lot of love, and it shows in its level of polish.

Screen Rant – 3.5/5

The essential excitement of turning the page to find out what happens next is so powerfully represented in The Plucky Squire, and the game maintains that energy in its final chapters, even if it otherwise lacks any notable tension or danger. It’s an entertaining and very engaging book, but it’s a shame that The Plucky Squire’s best ideas weren’t explored.

Reviews of The Plucky Squire have been generally positive, highlighting its creative approach and charming aesthetic. The game is notable for its seamless transition between 2D and 3D worlds, as well as its fun puzzles that captivate young and old alike. Its clever humor, beautiful graphics, and well-balanced gameplay are widely praised. Some consider it to be both a playful and reflective work, addressing deep themes about artistic creation in the video game industry.

However, some critics have noted some drawbacks. The story is sometimes considered uncaptivating and some artistic styles too contrasting. The game can also lack tension or exploration of some promising ideas. Despite this, it remains entertaining and enjoyable, carried by careful production and attention to detail that testifies to the love with which it was created.

The Plucky Squire is now available for €29.99 on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC and PS5, and comes with PlayStation Plus service day one for Extra and Premium members.
