Middle East tensions: Hundreds injured after pagers explode in Lebanon

D“Hundreds of people were injured in different regions of Lebanon” in the explosion of pagers on Tuesday, Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad told AFP.

A Source close to Hezbollah told AFP that a “large number” of members of the pro-Iranian group had been injured when their pagers, a radio messaging system, exploded in several of the group’s strongholds in Lebanon. However, she assured that there had been no deaths.

Dozens of Hezbollah members were injured in the explosion in several strongholds of the pro-Iranian group in Lebanon, sources close to the Lebanese movement told AFP.

Iran’s ambassador to Beirut, Mojtaba Amani, was injured in a pager explosion, Iranian state television reported Tuesday. “He told us a few minutes ago that he was fine, conscious and there was no danger for him,” the television added, without specifying whether the pager, a paging system, belonged to him.

“Israeli hacking”

A Source close to Hezbollah told AFP that it was an “Israeli hack”.

“Dozens of Hezbollah members were injured in the southern suburbs of Beirut,” the Islamist group’s stronghold, and “in southern Lebanon by the explosion of their pagers,” said another Source close to the party.

Hezbollah had asked its members to stop using cell phones to avoid Israeli hacking.

The powerful party has set up a pager system through which its members are called to join their units.

The day after the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, triggered by an attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on October 7 on Israeli soil, Hezbollah opened the southern Lebanese front to support its Palestinian ally.
