RMC radio wants to win over new listeners

At first glance, nothing has changed at the headquarters of RMC radio, where the station held a back-to-school press conference on Tuesday, September 10. But appearances can sometimes be deceptive. On July 2, the BFM-TV group left the Altice umbrella to officially become the property of Rodolphe Saadé, the head of the shipping and logistics company CMA-CGM, and his family. “We all passed our boat license”, says Alain Marschall, co-presenter, with Olivier Truchot, of the emblematic show The Big Mouthswhich will mark its twentieth anniversary of a prime-time broadcast on the RMC Story channel on October 16 – it also welcomes two new columnists, former ministers Marlène Schiappa and David Douillet.

“Mr. Saadé bought a magnificent castle, BFM-TV. But at the back of the park, there is a beautiful villa: RMC. A gem!”says Karim Nedjari, its director for the past four years. In addition to providing daily coverage, RMC is broadcast on the RMC Story channel from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., provides sports information to BFM-TV, and ranks first among podcasts with its show L’Afterfootetc. This summer, the station has also expanded, adding to its audio stream three digital versions entirely dedicated to the Olympic Games.

“We are seen as a nice radio station, even though we have real expertise [en matière d’information]but we don’t know how to make it known”regrets Mr. Nedjari. Never mind. Not only “We will speed up the information”promises the editorial director, Emmanuel Renard (Matthieu Belliard is returning to the house, notably as a joker for the morning show presenter, Apolline de Malherbe; the writer and editor with a passion for history, Arthur Chevallier, has a column every day at 7:10 a.m.), but the station, not used to advertising campaigns, is in the process of “shoot a film” advertising highlighting its new identity. It will also communicate more, in the future, on its performances – a wish of the new shareholder.

“Much more than a radio, much more than a sports radio, we are a digital audio media”continues Mr. Nedjari, who paid a warm tribute to Hervé Béroud, the former news director of BFM-TV and RMC, who returned to RTL this summer. At his side, Nicolas de Tavernost, former boss of M6, now vice-president of CMA Médias, insists: “We need to establish ourselves in this segment of digital audio quickly, hence the importance of having good apps and creating native podcasts [par opposition aux émissions proposées en replay]. But there is no digital without linear.
