Controversial initiative: Mother’s Day replaced by Parents’ Day in a Quebec school

Teachers at an elementary school in Quebec have decided not to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with their students this year.

“Considering the heterogeneity of the families of our students this year, we have made the decision not to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. On the other hand, we still want to highlight you by the end of the year. To do this, we will celebrate Parents’ Day, ”the 2nd year teachers at La Chanterelle school wrote to the parents.

This primary school in Val-Bélair, located in the borough of La Haute Saint-Charles, is a public institution with 448 students.

“A good intention”

After checking with the Center de services scolaire de la Capitale, this message was indeed sent.

Spokesperson Marie-Claude Lavoie confirms that the email is the initiative of three second-grade teachers. According to her, the school administration was not aware.

“As some students in their classes don’t have a mother or father or are in foster care, they decided to mark Parents’ Day instead by preparing a craft for them. Of course, this communication is well-intentioned, but could have been misinterpreted. It should be noted that the school administration was not aware of this action,” explained Ms. Lavoie, communications advisor.
