Road cut in two after severe storms

Part of the road collapsed in Béarn due to heavy rains that fell during the night from Friday to Saturday.

It is impossible to cross the town of Urdos, in Béarn, via the RN134. This Saturday, September 7 morning, the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques shared on its social networks an impressive photo of the roadway cut in two after heavy rains that fell during the night. The collapse of the road occurred “between the town centre and the Somport tunnel, making traffic impossible”indicates the prefecture on X.

According to the mayor of Urdos, Jacques Marquèzen, interviewed by France Bleu, the hole would be 50 metres wide and around fifty metres deep.

No injuries reported

The gendarmerie and the Atlantic interdepartmental road department have set up diversions to allow users to reach the Spanish border from the town of Gurmençon. Météo France had placed the department on orange flood alert from 6 p.m. this Friday to 6 a.m. this Saturday.

While the entire Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Oloron and Pau section was affected by the weather warning, it was in the Aspe Valley, in Urdos, Cette-Eygun and Etsaut in particular, that the bad weather was the most violent. In a press release, the prefecture announced that:“There were no injuries, but there was significant material damage.”. “The situation is still not stable in these four municipalities where the security and emergency services are continuing their reconnaissance, particularly in the municipality of Borce”the statement continued. At this time, 304 residents of Urdos, Borce and Etsaut are without electricity.
