FIGAROVOX/Tribune – In a collective forum, at the initiative of Renaissance MP Sylvain Maillard, 77 elected officials from the capital (Renaissance and Modem) call on Anne Hidalgo to consult Parisians on the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

There is no denying that the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will go down as one of the best editions in a century. While many – including within the Paris City Hall – were predicting failure, the Games were a showcase of all the wealth that our country has to offer.

First of all, a showcase of the beauty of our capital, with a memorable opening ceremony along the Seine and exceptional competition sites, Place de la Concorde, at the Grand Palais and at the Château de Versailles. With an enthusiastic public who were there and a record number of tickets sold for all editions combined, 8.7 million. With, of course, exceptional sporting performances, and a record number of medals for France. But also, with impeccable security measures and increased capacity of public transport which contributed decisively to the success of these Games.

All these successes are above all a collective success. It is that of the organizing committee, which was able to lead this titanic project from the first to the last day. Of the authorities and services of the State, the region, the municipality, who provided the means to achieve the ambitions displayed. Of the athletes who knew as always how to surpass themselves and offer moments of history to a conquered public. Of the 45,000 volunteers who, for two months, accomplished a work of constant effort.

We, elected representatives of Paris, are calling for the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be the subject of broad consultation among Parisians.

It would have been beneficial for this collective spirit to continue. However, even before the end of these Games, the mayor of Paris chose to break with this spirit, by unilaterally announcing that the Olympic rings would remain on the Eiffel Tower. In addition to the illegality of the decision – their hanging had been temporarily authorized by the law of May 19, 2023 – the symbol that Gustave Eiffel’s work represents for our country and our city cannot be altered by the decision of a single person.

Beyond that, we, elected representatives of Paris, are calling for the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be the subject of a broad consultation of Parisians. Whether on the material side – maintaining the Olympic cauldron at the Tuileries, better access to Parisian sports grounds – or on the immaterial side – increasing the security system, the transport offer and supporting the new generation of athletes (able-bodied and disabled).

To keep the Olympic and Paralympic spirit alive, you have to be able to listen and follow the general interest!
