The company has developed an artificial intelligence tool that assists doctors during prenatal ultrasounds.

Its artificial intelligence tool for prenatal ultrasounds has caught Samsung’s eye: the French company Sonio announced on Monday, September 2, its acquisition by Samsung Medison, a subsidiary of the South Korean giant. The amount of the acquisition has not been disclosed, but it had been estimated in the press at 85 million euros when Samsung Medison, a specialist in diagnostic imaging devices, announced its intention to acquire the company in May.

Founded in 2020, Sonio has developed, in collaboration with obstetricians at Necker Enfants Malades Hospital, a solution that uses artificial intelligence to help interpret ultrasound scans in gynecology and obstetrics, and automate the reports of these examinations.

Sonio will continue its development

Following the transaction, Sonio will continue its commercial growth “autonomously” and development “products and services compatible with all manufacturers of ultrasound equipment”according to a press release. “Sonio plans to continue advancing the technology to improve prenatal diagnosis globally, including for regions most affected by caregiver shortages.”said Cécile Brosset, CEO and co-founder of Sonio, in this press release.

A year ago, the startup raised $14 million from various investors and then obtained a US marketing authorization for its Sonio Detect product, which uses algorithms to allow the practitioner to visualize risk factors and cuts to be made in pregnancy monitoring ultrasounds. AI analyzes the images and data from these exams. It allows doctors to detect possible anomalies in the development of the fetus.
