The man who was already Prime Minister during the last months of François Hollande’s five-year term wants to “avoid additional difficulties” for the country, according to his entourage.

Finally an epilogue? As BFMTV learned from his entourage a few minutes before his meeting with Emmanuel Macron, this Monday, September 2, the former Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says he is “available to serve the country.”

Today, the President of the Republic continues his consultations in order to find his future Prime Minister. He also meets with former Presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, as well as Xavier Bertrand, the LR president of the Hauts-de-France region.

“Bernard Cazeneuve is going to this meeting with the availability to serve the country, in order to avoid additional difficulties,” said the former minister’s entourage. On Sunday, this same entourage had assured him:

“Bernard Cazeneuve is not asking for it, but if he does it is out of duty and to avoid additional difficulties for the country.”

Uncertain support from the left

Minister of the Interior during the 2015 attacks, then Prime Minister during the last months of François Hollande’s five-year term, Bernard Cazeneuve, 61, left the PS in 2022, fiercely opposed to the alliance with LFI within the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes).

He is now the favourite to take up the torch at Matignon.

Although he could have the support of the central bloc and part of the right, he is not supported by any of the left-wing parties, even if his arrival at Matignon could divide the socialists.

Invited to BFMTV, Olivier Faure simply indicated his desire to censor “any continuity with Macronism”, fearing that the former socialist could find himself “prisoner of the Ensemble coalition”
