While remaining vague, Eric Ciotti, the contested president of the Les Républicains (LR) party after his alliance with the National Rally (RN), announced on Saturday August 31, during his political comeback, that he wanted to transform Les Républicains into the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR).
After having dynamited his political family in June by breaking the cordon sanitaire that the heirs of Gaullism have always maintained with the extreme right, the deputy arrived to the sound of I Will Survive in front of some 3,000 supporters, according to the organizers, gathered in Levens, in his stronghold in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Considering that “The Republican brand is now outdated, discredited by its defeats, its contradictions, its lack of courage”he proposed “to rebuild [sa] political family »explaining that “The Union of the Right for the Republic will be this great right-wing party”. “The Republicans are changing. The spirit of the Republicans, at least the one that[il] has worn, is not dead. It transforms itself, it rebuilds itself, it reinvents itself. It is a form of rebirth today”he insisted later in a press briefing.
“I am not resigning from the Republicans, we are creating a new political party”he added, brushing aside questions about his ability to decide alone to transform LR in this way when its leaders have already tried in vain three times to exclude him and are now waiting for the courts to rule again on October 14.

The “rebirth of the UDR”, this “vast popular movement”
In his speech of about an hour, he stressed that with the UDR, it was in his eyes the “Rebirth of the UDR”ce “vast popular movement… desired by General de Gaulle in the face of the peril of May 68”At the time, the acronym UDR stood for Union for the Defense of the Republic and then became Union of Democrats for the Republic.

He also mentioned his intention to run for mayor of Nice against his number one political enemy: Mayor Christian Estrosi (Horizons), whom he described as “concrete pharaoh” Who “spending without counting while the people of Nice pay the bill”. “I am preparing myself every minute, every second to take up the challenge of the renewal of Nice”he said.
