After weeks of all kinds of rumors, it seems that OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI “agent” this week. The latter would be able to perform tasks for you on a computer.
Conversational agents boosted with AI such as ChatGPT are now has-been. In the small world of Silicon Valley, the fashion is for “agents”, small programs capable of taking control of your computer to carry out simple tasks.
In recent weeks, announcements on the subject have multiplied with Anthropic which got the ball rolling last October, then Google in December. According to sources interviewed by the media The Informationit would now be OpenAI’s turn to launch.
OpenAI joins the dance
The company behind ChatGPT has so far been very discreet on the subject, even though it channels all the fantasies linked to artificial intelligence. If rumors have been floating for a long time about a possible launch in January 2025, the latest rumors point to an announcement which could take place as early as this week.
The little agent, who until now has been nicknamed “Operator” by the indiscretions of Bloomberg and The Information, would operate in a similar manner to its competitors. With the Internet user’s consent, the software could take control of a computer, browse the web, and carry out simple tasks, such as reserving a seat in a restaurant, writing an email or reserving a train ticket.

To do this, the machine would take screenshots of your PC, send them to the OpenAI servers which, once the image has been analyzed, would tell the local agent what to do. A laborious process (and likely to pose privacy problems), but currently the only one likely to make these “agents” work.
An Operator who would move forward slowly
According to rumors, OpenAI is actually preparing the release of several different agents. Operator would simply be the first in a long line of more or less specialized programs.
-To lend even more credibility to these rumors, several pieces of code unearthed on Twitter prove that the ChatGPT macOS application already mentions the existence of Operator. Some tests also show that the OpenAI agent does better than the competition, but is still very, very far from being as efficient as a human in accomplishing certain tasks.
It seems that, initially at least, Operator inherits a small “beta” label and is reserved for those who are not afraid. Undoubtedly the program will only be accessible to Internet users with a paid subscription to ChatGPT.
