Taxes: the VaudTax software will disappear and the paperwork with it

You no longer know where to turn with the multiple thick tax envelopes received in the mailbox, between calculation of deposits, declaration form, tax decision? Soon you will be able to give it up. Not on paying taxes, that would be great, but on paper. The General Directorate of Taxation (DGF) announced on Monday that it wanted to intensify its online services. All Vaud taxpayers can already register in an online portal. “Ultimately, everyone will also be able, if they wish, to receive their tax documents electronically instead of by post,” says the Canton, without however articulating a date.

A date, on the other hand, there is one for the announced death of the VaudTax software. Those who are still using it will only have access to it this year and then that’s it. “The VaudTax software, in place since the 2003 tax period, will no longer be available from 2026,” says the DGF. Instead, you will have to use the tax website. In 2024, 182,000 tax returns were made using this method, compared to 178,000 with the software, the technology of which has become “obsolete”. This is the first time that the number of declarations via the site has exceeded those via the software.

Less paper, disappearance of the software to be replaced by an online portal, but don’t panic. “We are aware that the transition from software to online delivery may lead to some reluctance on the part of taxpayers, often out of fear and/or lack of knowledge,” admits the Canton. He plans to let those who wish to continue to fill out their documents by hand. In 2024, the tax authorities still received 14,500 declarations completed by hand, a figure which is decreasing year after year.

To encourage people to go digital, the canton will once again organize sessions, meetings or awareness raising among the population. “In addition, a pilot project in collaboration with the Chancellery for a tax chatbot is underway,” note the authorities.
