(Keystone-ATS) “The reactionary international, as (French) President Macron said a few days ago, (…) led by the richest man on the planet, openly attacks our institutions, incites hatred and openly calls to support the heirs of Nazism in Germany during the next elections”, denounced Pedro Sánchez in a speech marking the start of the commemorations of the death of the dictator Franco and the advent of democracy in Spain, fifty years ago.

For weeks, Elon Musk has been increasing his provocations on X by inviting himself into political debates in the United Kingdom and Germany, in support of the radical right. The billionaire, close to Donald Trump, will participate in a conversation on Thursday with the leader of the German far-right party, AfD, broadcast on X, a month and a half before the early legislative elections.

Fascism, 3rd political force in Europe

“All this is a problem, it is a challenge, it is a challenge that should challenge all of us who believe in democracy,” warned socialist Pedro Sánchez during his speech at the Reina Museum Sofía de Madrid, home to Pablo Picasso’s famous painting “Guernica”, one of the best-known symbols of the anti-Franco struggle.

Mr. Sánchez also responded to the right-wing opposition (PP), which accuses him of using the 50th anniversary of Franco’s death for political opportunism.

“Autocratic regimes are progressing in half the world” and “the fascism that we thought we had left behind is already the third political force in Europe,” noted the socialist leader.

“Fear that the regression will repeat itself”

Dictator Franco ruled Spain from the end of the civil war in 1939 until his death at the age of 82 on November 20, 1975. Two years later, Spain celebrated democratic elections and, in 1978, the current Constitution was adopted by referendum.

“It is not necessary to be of a certain ideology, neither left, nor center, nor right, to look with sadness, with immense sadness and also with terror, the dark years of Francoism and fear that this regression is not repeated,” added Mr. Sánchez.
