UN warns of “aggravated” humanitarian crisis in Myanmar

The United Nations warned Friday of a “worsening” humanitarian crisis in Myanmar where more than three million people are displaced by the ongoing conflict.

“Civilians continue to face extreme protection risks, acute food insecurity and a near collapse of essential public services,” said UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq. of a briefing.

He noted that the conflict in the country has forced more than 3.5 million people to leave their homes, representing a “staggering” increase of nearly 1.5 million internally displaced people compared to to last year.

Citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the spokesperson noted that the nearly $1 billion humanitarian response plan launched for the Southeast Asian country in 2024 does was only 36% funded.
By 2025, nearly 20 million people need assistance, up from 18.6 million last year, he said, adding that these levels are “unprecedented.”

According to OCHA, the current year’s humanitarian response plan aims to provide life-saving assistance to 5.5 million people, requiring funding of $1.1 billion.
