What is inter-lane traffic?
The circulation inter-files allowed motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers to circulate between lines of cars during caps or slowdowns, under certain safety conditions. It aimed to:
Reduce traffic jamsparticularly on roads and highways.
Facilitate mobility two-wheelers in heavy traffic.
However, this practice has never been included in the Traffic Lawsalthough governed by strict rules. Among them: Do not exceed 50 km/h. Respect a maximum speed differential of 30 km/h with surrounding vehicles.
Why the end of the experiment?
Since its launch in August 2021the experiment was intended to test the conditions for a possible permanent authorization. However, the results of the evaluations carried out by the Road safety were not considered sufficiently conclusive to integrate this practice definitively into legislation.
Penalties for cross-line traffic
From January 1, 2025, any lane overtaking will be considered a traffic offense. The sanctions provided for are as follows:
Fine of 135 euros : this sanction applies if the offense is noticed by an agent or via a surveillance camera.
Reduction of 3 points on the license : in cases where driving is considered dangerous.
Important : These measures concern all roads and highways in France, without exception.
Bikers called to adapt
The end of inter-lane traffic marks a major change for two-wheel drivers used to weaving between cars. From now on, they will have to respect standard traffic rules.
