A visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia is planned for 2025, according to Russian Ambassador to Beijing Igor Morgulov, as reported by the RIA news agency. He said the details of this trip were being finalized and highlighted the significant importance given to this visit. China’s Foreign Ministry stopped short of confirming the visit at a news conference, but it stressed the strength and continuity of relations between the two nations at all levels.
Recent developments in Sino-Russian relations
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China in February 2022 solidified a “no-holds-barred” partnership just before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He returned to Beijing in May 2023 after his re-election, emphasizing a new era of relations centered on opposition to U.S. policies. Xi Jinping returned the favor by visiting Moscow in 2023, welcomed as a “dear friend” by Putin after securing an unprecedented third term.
Shared challenges and counter-action
Morgulov also explained that China understands Russia’s view on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, citing common challenges such as increasing pressure from the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region. He cited NATO’s alleged plans to expand its military presence in the region, saying a joint response from Russia and China is crucial to countering Western policies. Mr. Morgulov stressed the need for a “double counteraction” to respond to the strategy of “double deterrence” employed by the West against the two nations.
Proposals for peace in Ukraine
In an attempt to bring peace to Ukraine, China, alongside Brazil, proposed a plan that included a ceasefire and consideration of the security interests of all parties involved. Russia has expressed support for these proposals. However, Ukraine, which defends its own projects, including NATO membership, considers that the initiative of China and Brazil favors Moscow’s objectives.
Current situation of the conflict
The conflict continues, with Russian forces controlling around 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory and having made significant territorial gains in recent weeks.
