Sunslice: The Belgian startup that shines in Greenland with IMAQA

Although their first crowdfunding attempt in 2017 failed, the two engineers remained undeterred. Their tenacity and confidence in their technology allowed them to convince the Walloon digital fund W.IN.G. by Digital Wallonia, which granted a convertible loan of 50,000 euros. This funding was the springboard needed to launch their first production of 400 units and further develop their technology. Today, the adventure continues more than ever.

Products that withstand extreme environments

During IMAQA’s expedition to Greenland, extreme weather conditions and logistical challenges put a strain on the team’s equipment. This is where Sunslice proved its usefulness. Compact, durable and efficient, this made it possible to keep electronic devices charged, an essential asset in this remote region where energy is rare and precious.

A great Belgian success

From its humble beginnings, Sunslice has found its place in the market. As of 2018, major distributors such as Vanden Borre and Fnac have integrated the Photon into their shelves, followed by AS Adventure. Thanks to a strategy combining in-store distribution and online sales, Sunslice sold nearly 4,000 units in 2019.

But the Sunslice story isn’t just about numbers. The startup was able to demonstrate that its product was not only intended for adventurers like the IMAQA team. Backpackers, ski enthusiasts, and even occasional travelers quickly adopted their solar solutions for their efficiency and intuitive design.

From Science to Adventure: A 100% Belgian collaboration

The partnership between Sunslice and IMAQA embodies a common vision: using technology to push the boundaries of knowledge and raise public awareness of environmental issues. By putting their innovation at the service of science, Sunslice proves that technology can be a real engine of progress in the most inaccessible regions of our planet.
