This Saturday, December 28, 2024, the National Assembly of Senegal proceeded with the installation of the High Court of Justice, a crucial step in strengthening accountability and the fight against impunity.

This institution, governed by the Senegalese Constitution and Organic Law No. 2002-10 of February 22, 2002, is made up of 8 full judges and 8 substitute judges elected by the National Assembly. It is chaired by the First President of the Supreme Court, assisted by the Deputy President, the President of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is carried out by the Attorney General at the Supreme Court, with the First Attorney General as deputy.

The High Court of Justice is responsible for judging the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, ministers and their accomplices in cases of high treason or conspiracy against state security. It thus plays an essential role in the Senegalese judicial system, ensuring the accountability of the highest authorities of the State and contributing to the consolidation of the rule of law.

This installation comes after the announcement by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of the intention to repeal the amnesty law passed by the previous legislature, aiming to strengthen accountability and fight against impunity.
