66 kilometers long, this highway discharges a flow of 1.2 million cubic meters every day, or a speed of 15 m³/second, into the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah dam. The lake has expanded to the point of reaching the surrounding plains.
This transfer, carried out thanks to Moroccan know-how, made it possible not only to supply Rabat and Casablanca with drinking water (800,000 m³ for the two cities), but also to store a reserve of 400,000 m³ in the lake. Similar projects are in preparation between the northern and southern hydraulic basins. Residents of the area of Lake Mohammed Ben Abdellah, in particular farmers growing food crops, hope to take advantage of the abundance of this water to irrigate their land.
This megaproject required an investment of around six billion dirhams. The water highway will transport a total of 400 million cubic meters of water per year to the regions of Rabat and Casablanca. The project owners of this major achievement include the Ministries of Equipment and Water, Agriculture, Interior, Economy and Finance, as well as the Development Office agricultural sector of Gharb.
