The local Senegalese national football team is preparing to meet Liberia this Sunday in Monrovia in the first leg of the play-offs for qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (Chan). This pan-African tournament will be held from 1is to February 28 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
After being exempted from the first round, the Senegalese Lions are aiming for a solid performance during this crucial trip to Liberia. The reigning champions, under the leadership of their new coach Souleymane Diallo, hope to take advantage of their preparation which has spanned more than two months, although it has not included international friendly matches. As reported by our colleague Le Quotidien, Diallo expressed his satisfaction with the state of preparation of his team.
Facing them, Liberia, which this time has called up a reinforced squad with most of the players from its A team, aims to offer a good performance in front of its audience. The Senegalese and Liberians know each other well, having already met during the qualifications for Chan 2023. At the time, a large victory (3-0) in Monrovia was followed by a defeat (1-2) for the Lions at home.
To supervise this confrontation at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia, a Malian refereeing trio composed of Ousmane Diakaté, Baba Yomboliba and Souleymane Traoré will be present. This sporting event is eagerly awaited by spectators in both countries.
