A 59-year-old woman died on Sunday evening after being hit by a tram in Schaerbeek. The tram driver, in shock following the accident, was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 59-year-old woman died on Sunday evening after being hit by a tram in Schaerbeek, the Brussels prosecutor’s office said on Monday, confirming information from Bruzz.

The accident occurred on Sunday around 10:50 p.m. on Boulevard Lambermont in Schaerbeek. The police and emergency services immediately arrived on the scene. The victim, trapped under the tram, was freed and received first aid, but died on the spot as a result of his injuries.

“The tram driver was in shock following the accident and was taken to hospital for treatment”indicated the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. “The exact circumstances of the accident have not yet been determined and are under investigation.”

According to Stib, a public transport company in the Brussels region, the accident took place in an area where there are no stops or pedestrian crossings. “The tram runs entirely on site specific to this location”explained Guy Sablon, spokesperson for the Stib.

“The accident disrupted tram traffic on lines 7 and 35 between the Van Praet and Meiser stops until the end of service on Sunday”he added.
