An alliance made up of bourgeois parties calls on Monday to reject the popular initiative of the Young Greens ‘for environmental responsibility’, on which the people vote on February 9. Opponents denounce the project as ‘unrealistic, costly and irresponsible’.

The initiative would lead to an explosion in prices, a drop in prosperity and a ‘drastic’ reduction in consumption, declared a cross-party alliance in Bern on the occasion of the launch of the no campaign. Furthermore, the text is ‘useless’, because Switzerland has succeeded in decoupling its economic growth from its consumption of resources.

The alliance brings together PLR, UDC and Center elected officials. It also includes organizations, such as ‘Infra Suisse’ which brings together companies active in infrastructure construction.

The initiative requires that the Swiss economy, including imports, re-insert itself within the land’s natural limits within ten years. If accepted, Switzerland would have to significantly reduce environmental damage caused by national consumption.
