According to the latest figures published by the Friborg Statistical Service, the number of housing units in the canton doubled between 1990 and 2023. This spectacular growth far exceeds the increase in the population, which was multiplied by 1, 5 over the same period.

At the end of 2023, Friborg had almost 166,000 housing units for around 341,000 inhabitants. In total, 42% of Friborg homes were built after 1991.

This increase was not uniform across the entire territory. The districts of Veveyse, Broye and Gruyère experienced the largest increase, which can be explained by particularly marked demographic growth in these regions.

The Statistical Service points out that mainly two and three-room apartments have been put on the market in recent years. Individual houses, for their part, today only represent a little more than a quarter of Friborg housing. Let’s not forget that in Switzerland, 6 out of 10 people are renters.

It is in Broye that we find the highest proportion of individual houses, reaching 38% of the real estate stock. In comparison, Sarine only has 18% of individual houses. This difference is logically explained by the higher urban density in urban areas, leaving less space for villas.

Despite this impressive growth in the number of housing units, the canton of Friborg has a vacancy rate of only 1.16%.
