Syria needs ‘immediate increased humanitarian aid’, the UN envoy assured on Sunday. The United Nations estimates that more than a million people have been displaced since the rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad.

‘We all know that Syria has been going through a huge humanitarian crisis. We must ensure that Syria receives increased immediate humanitarian assistance for the people in Syria, and for all refugees who wish to return. This is extremely important,’ said Geir Pedersen upon his arrival in Damascus.

Furthermore, Mr. Pederson believes that the establishment of ‘credible’ justice in Syria is necessary to avoid acts of ‘revenge’. ‘We need to see that there is justice and accountability for the crimes committed. And we must ensure that this goes through a credible judicial system, and that there is no revenge,’ he said, according to his statements sent to journalists.
