Having access to reliable and legal contraception represents an indisputable step forward for women. As such, the pill has long been established as a symbol of sexual liberation. But half a century after its legalization, other discourses are emerging, which show that contraception is not experienced solely in terms of emancipation. Poorly tolerated hormones, contraceptive mental burden which mainly falls on women: there is no shortage of examples. This is what sociologist and CNRS researcher Cécile Thomé explains in her recent book Bodies available. How Contraception Shapes Heterosexual Sexuality (Ed. La Découverte). “Questioning contraception is not about calling into question its emancipatory dimension, but about trying to understand the conditions in which women use it,” she explains.
