The procedure has been going on for more than 10 years. At the end of 2013, the organization TRIAL International filed a criminal complaint against Rifaat el-Assad, 87, – brother of the former Syrian leader Hafez el-Assad, and uncle of Bashar, overthrown a week ago – for his role in the bloody repression of an insurrection in the city of Hama in the early 1980s. War crimes which caused the deaths of 10,000 to 40 000 people.
This complaint launched a long investigation, fraught with administrative difficulties, which resulted in the issuance of an international arrest warrant in November 2021 by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Confederation (MPC). Then, on March 11, 2024, the MPC indicted Rifaat el-Assad for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Viewed by Sunday Morning and the Sunday newspaper, the “21-page” indictment lists “bloody episodes” and accuses the former leader of the Syrian regime of “cruel treatment and illegal detention of civilians”, “torture” and “murder”.
