This Sunday, December 15, during Pope Francis' visit to Ajaccio, traffic will be completely prohibited in the city center, with the exception of authorized vehicles. It will also be seriously disrupted in the rest of the city.

This Sunday, December 15, from 6 a.m., access to the city of Ajaccio will be prohibited to all private vehicles and two-wheelers.

Access to the city by private vehicles will be prohibited from 6 a.m. until the end of the system. These restrictions apply also for two-wheelers (bicycles and motorcycles).

People wishing to enter Ajaccio after 6 a.m. will therefore have to park in temporary parking areas.

From these areas, located at Col du Listinconu, Baleone and Porticcio, continuous free shuttles as well as Muvistrada buses will allow pilgrims to be transported to different points of the city, then to accompany them back at the very end of the day.

If the weather permits, the maritime shuttle linking the south shore of the Gulf to Ajaccio will also be in operation.

It will also be possible to take the train from Mezzana and Effrico stations.

Specific devices are also provided for people with reduced mobility.

It will also be possible to park in several car parks on the Route des Sanguinaires located between La Parata and the cemetery. There, Muvistrada bus 5 will be in service.

Free Capa shuttles will also be in service from the parking lot of the old La Miséricorde hospital to the prefecture.

Once arrived in the city, pedestrians will be able to move freely, except in the prohibited spaces located on the Pope's route and indicated in red on the map below:

Areas open to the public with security screening are provided so that pilgrims can attend the Holy Father’s stroll:

  • Waterfront between Saint-Joseph and Saint-Jean
  • Place Abbatucci
  • Chamber of Commerce parking in the city center
  • Boulevards Lantivy and Pascal Rossini

As a reminder, access to the fan zone at Place Miot and to the open-air mass at Casone is only possible upon presentation of accreditation.

Residents of Ajaccio will be able to leave their homes on foot throughout the day on Sunday.

“Even in areas closed to the public, local residents will be able to enter and leave the area, upon presentation of proof of address and via identified access points”specifies the prefecture of Corsica.

It will also be allowed to stand on balconies, regardless of the area of ​​the city.

Please note that this entire system comes into force this Sunday, December 15 from 6 a.m. On Saturday December 14, “there will be no traffic restrictions in the city”recalls the prefecture which warns that “Traffic jams are, however, to be expected, given the expected influx of population and the installation of barriers for Sunday”.
