Karin Keller-Sutter will president of the Swiss Confederation in 2025. The Federal Assembly elected her on Wednesday by 168 votes out of 203 valid ballots. The almost 61-year-old Saint Gallian liberal-radical succeeds the Valais centrist Viola Amherd.

(Keystone-ATS) Thirty-five ballots bore the names of other personalities. In addition, 23 ballots were blank.

The finance minister got a good score. Viola Amherd was elected last year by 158 votes out of 204 valid ballots.

It was Micheline Calmy-Rey who had the worst election in 2011 with 106 votes. Conversely, the record is held by Jean-Pascal Delamuraz and Ueli Maurer. Both obtained 201 votes in 1988, respectively 2018.

Karin Keller-Sutter will be assisted by Guy Parmelin. Le Vaudois was elected to the vice-presidency by 196 valid ballots. Twenty-three ballots had various names. Furthermore, fifteen ballots were blank and one was void. The Minister of the Economy will take the reins of the Confederation in 2026.
