So far, Switzerland has had nine female presidents. The first woman elected was Ruth Dreifuss in 1999. Then, Micheline Calmy-Rey (2007 and 2011), Doris Leuthard (2010 and 2017), Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf (2012), Simonetta Sommaruga (2015 and 2020) and finally Viola Amherd (2024). But the election of “KKS” is a first for the PLR which also sees two of its representatives preside over the Federal Chambers. In fact, the country’s third party has never placed a woman from its ranks as President of the Confederation.
