Responding to the Canton’s invitation, more than 1,300 private curators participated in the four regional meetings organized this fall. On this occasion, several measures to improve the system in force since the reform of curatorship were announced. The State also thanked these volunteers for their commitment to people in need of protection. The success of these meetings is proof of the solidarity of the Vaudoises.
In the canton of Vaud, 60% of curatorship mandates are taken care of by citizens who have committed themselves voluntarily since the reform of curatorship in 2018. This represents nearly 8,000 vulnerable people who, for example, cannot no longer take care of their administrative and financial affairs alone, are supported by around 5,400 private curators.
To exchange views with these volunteers, four regional meetings were organized this fall in the presence of State Councilor Vassilis Venizelos, State Councilor Rebecca Ruiz and the President of the Cantonal Court Marie-Pierre Bernel who thanked them for their solidarity, essential to social cohesion.
Organized by region (Lausanne, Morges, Yverdon and Vevey), the meetings brought together more than 1,300 private curators and gave rise to rich discussions. They made it possible to present the results of the satisfaction survey carried out in 2023 among volunteers and to inform them of the various improvement measures implemented since the Vaud reform of curatorship, including a continuous strengthening of training, a consolidation of the support offered at the different stages of recruitment as well as an improvement in the appointment process. The private curators were also able to express the concrete difficulties encountered in the context of their mission.
Increasing needs
If this solidarity commitment arouses interest among the population, it is necessary to remember that regular recruitment of new volunteers is essential.
Each year, it is a matter of responding to the gradual increase in the number of protection mandates (+ 3 to 5% per year on average for adults) due in particular to the aging of the population.
Engage as a voluntary curator
“Helping others” or even “giving meaning” are among the main drivers of commitment for volunteer curators. In addition to providing support to a vulnerable man or woman, this activity also allows us to build often rewarding links with the person under guardianship.
The Canton of Vaud is therefore launching a new appeal to citizens who wish to get involved. Interested people are invited to register via the website www.vd.ch/curatelles or the telephone number 0800 628 700. Profiles with varied skills in the administrative and social fields are sought.
