We recently learned that peanuts and nuts were back in 75 schools in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Quebec. Surprising news, because peanuts have been banned for several years to protect allergic students. But scientists no longer recommend this ban. Will the return of these foods allergens in lunch boxes is a good idea? Here are the PROS and CONS of allowing peanuts in school.
The PROS ✅
Science says: banning doesn’t work
After several years of study and observation, scientists have concluded that the ban does not work: allergic reactions still occur. Experts say it is more effective to educate children and train school staff than to ban foods.
It gives a false sense of security
If we are allergic and we know that the foods that cause us to react are prohibited, we become less careful, less vigilant. We may not take the trouble to check that the granola bar our friend shares with us is indeed peanut-free. Teachers are also inclined to monitor the contents of lunch boxes less. And it’s when we let our guard down that accidents can happen.
-It’s so much simpler
No need to worry about what you can or cannot bring in your lunch. We choose the snacks we like. We cook whatever muffin recipe we want. Plus, peanuts and nuts make simple, nutritious snacks.
