The House of Press Cartoons in Morges (VD) retraces a year of news through the eyes of Swiss cartoonists. The “Retro 2024” opens its doors on Saturday and is on view until February 9.

Free, the exhibition brings together nearly 170 illustrations created by 36 press cartoonists. Among the themes covered are Nemo’s victory at Eurovision, as well as a look back at the votes of the year, with a particular focus on that on the 13th AVS pension.

The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East are also widely discussed, as are the climate or the rise of the extreme right in Europe, with the legislative elections in in particular.

Press cartoons are revealed to illustrate the year chronologically. The scenography aims “for them to constitute for themselves the journey to take to relive the past year”, indicates the press kit.

The exhibition was designed as “a labyrinth of drawings, reflections of multiple conflicts – physical or verbal – whose exit is as difficult to find as the outcome of a crisis.”

A wall of drawings

This year, the House of Press Cartoons opted for a poster signed by Solothurn Swen. It shows a grenade in the shape of a globe, with the regions of the world in conflict highlighted.

For the sixth consecutive year, the exhibition is accompanied by its catalog, in comic book format. It has a selection of 90 drawings from those exhibited in Morges, with a balance of signatures.

The exhibition will be supplemented by a wall of drawings produced “live” on Saturday by the 17 press cartoonists invited for the inauguration. The artists present will also lead workshops and carry out signings.

Fifteen years of press cartoons

This inaugural day will also be an opportunity to celebrate the museum’s 15th anniversary. Since November 2009, the House of Press Cartoons, resulting from the Caricature and Press Cartoon Salon organized during Morges-Sous-Rire, has permanently taken over the ground floor of the Morges Cultural Center. .

Having become a dinosaur in the field, the museum has hosted 54 exhibitions since its beginnings. It is the only place in Switzerland solely dedicated to this art.
