Morocco still among the last in learning maths and sciences (TIMSS 2023)

The results of the “Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study” (TIMSS) 2023, published on December 4, 2024, show a slight increase in the performance of Moroccan students in mathematics and science. However, Morocco remains at the bottom of the international rankings. With scores well below the international average, the country is struggling to catch up with its North African neighbors and address the persistent challenges of its education system.

Here are Morocco’s scores:

Fourth year of primary school:

  • Mathematics : 393 points, 56e/58
  • Sciences : 390 points, 56e/58

Second year of college:

  • Mathematics : 378 points, 56e/58
  • Sciences : 327 points, 56e/58

The international average is 500 points, which highlights Morocco’s significant delay compared to world standards.

Compared to the 2019 edition, Morocco recorded a slight improvement in its scores, particularly in the average of maths in primary education, going from 384 to 393 points (+9 points), and in science with +15 points ( 375 to 390 points). However, this progress remains insufficient to reach the international average, and the country continues to be among the bottom of the world ranking.

The level of Moroccan students lower than the regional average

The performance of Moroccan students remains lower than that of their Egyptian and Tunisian counterparts.

The country at the top of the ranking in the different categories is Singapore.

Morocco is thus among the least performing countries of the 58 participants in the study. Other nations with similar scores are:

  • South Africa
  • Kuwait
  • Pakistan
  • Philippines

TIMSS Ranking Overview:

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), conducted every four years by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), assesses students’ skills in mathematics and science globally. Since its first edition in 1995, TIMSS has provided valuable data on international education trends, helping countries compare and improve their education systems.
